General Advice
Awards not Rewards, damn it!
Yesterday, Arthur Camara, the designer of Topshot, asked this innocent enough question:
It really riled me up, because it’s one thing to mistakenly call something a Reward when it should actually be an Award. It’s another thing entirely to highlight that mistake in bold and place it front and center on your website.
Why does this even matter? Okay it probably doesn’t. I’m just one man chasing a quixotic Quest to right this one nagging piece of grammar. I don’t ask for any reward for my efforts.
But let’s clarify the difference between an Award and a Reward.
A Reward can be auto-completed. An Award cannot. I cannot award myself the title “Best & also Most Mundane Content Creator in the Topshot ecosystem”. Someone has to give me, has to award me that title. A reward is something I can give myself. I can reward myself with the latest challenge moment because I didn’t burn money chasing the challenge. I can reward myself after completing a team set by buying a rare moment from that team, for example. But only Topshot can award me a Collector Score bonus for that accomplishment.
In this blog post explaining today’s And Then There Were Four drop, Topshot makes a comparison to airlines for this first ever multi-queue.
This is a long-standing comparison in the TS community - how much should Vito be awarded for flying Delta (you can look that up in Twitter and find the taeks).
It was interesting to see Topshot go ahead and run with this metaphor officially in the blog.
The key point here is that the airlines clearly demarcate the difference between an award - something you redeem your miles for, and a reward - something they give you because you were lucky (promo, contest) or wronged.
As a brief aside, my offer to consult with you, dear reader, on your best credit card options for the trip you want to take, for free, still stands. Just hit reply and let’s fly.
Taking this to Topshot then - Quests give you actual rewards, if you’re lucky enough to be selected, you will earn a Playoff Pack (currently). That’s something you’ve had multiple opportunities to buy yourself.
Complete a challenge, and you will be awarded with a moment you cannot buy or find anywhere else, a moment direct from the Topshot mint. Topshot is awarding you for completing the challenge.
So, Arthur, to answer your question, no I don’t think you should put your glaring mistake front and center on the Topshot menu. I think you should change Rewards to Awards.

Damien Hirst’s new NFT forces the owner to choose between the token or the canvas. I’d take the token, but why? I don’t know!
All the major talent agencies have signed up for a new NFT project called Notables. Keep an eye on this.
Asics is releasing an NFT digital sneaker, their first. They certainly won’t be the last.
Best of luck for you today in the first drop! Best of luck for you today in the second drop, if you need it. Wow you really need the absolute best of luck for this third drop, I’m hoping you get a pack!
